Kate Romero, Ph.D.

forensic psychologist in new york city providing criminal assessments

Dr. Romero’s development as a forensic mental health professional began at EAC Community Reentry Assistance Network (CRAN), where she served as a case manager and later as a clinical coordinator. In these roles, she provided transitional case management services to individuals with severe mental illness reentering New York City from Rikers Island. During this time, she frequently conducted suicide and violence risk assessments and developed treatment recommendations, laying the foundation for her expertise in forensic evaluation and intervention.

Building on this experience, she pursued her PhD in Clinical Psychology, completing her Pre-Doctoral Internship at Rutgers University UBHC on the Correctional Track. There, she conducted comprehensive psychological evaluations and provided treatment at both a maximum-security prison and a specialized sex offender treatment facility in New Jersey. She gained additional forensic experience during a year-long externship at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, NY, where she provided individual psychotherapy to inmates with diverse mental health needs, facilitated trauma-informed, substance abuse, and anger management groups, and conducted forensic evaluations such as competency to stand trial and criminal responsibility assessments for the U.S. federal court system.
